Cleaning window blinds is an unpleasant task that people often put off until it becomes a huge job. Here are a few tips for getting those blinds clean again and some suggestions on keeping them clean.
1. If your blinds have become particularly dirty, it’s time to take them down and give them a good wash. Line your bathtub with a towel so they won’t scratch the tub finish and soak the blinds in warm soapy water. Regular liquid dish soap works great for this. Use a sponge to gently scrub them down. Rinse well and hang to dry. This method is not recommended for wood blinds.
2. If you don’t want to go to all the trouble of taking down your blinds, but want to give them a good cleaning, get out some old, clean socks and use them as cleaning gloves. This makes if easy for you to wipe down each slat and get into those little nooks that are hard to reach with a duster. Use a good all purpose cleaner, like 409 to help you cut through the grime and built up dust.
If that isn’t doing the trick, you can spray your blinds down with a foaming cleanser, leave for 10 to 15 minutes so the product has a chance to work and then begin wiping down the slats. Make sure you wipe the blinds down well at the end to remove all cleaning product. Only recommended for vinyl or metal blinds.
3. For regular upkeep, simply use a wool or feather duster and tilt the blinds down leaving them a bit open. This makes it easier for the duster to get to the surface of each slat. You can also use a vacuum with a brush attachment to vacuum off the dust.
Window blind cleaning can be tedious, but it’s important to do so on a regular basis as dust and dirt can be hard and time consuming to remove from blinds if left to build up.
