Since we’re in spring cleaning season and we’ve already posted tips on how to clean windows and window blinds, the package wouldn’t be complete until we talked about how to clean window tracks. A sliding window track can be a trap for dust, dirt and grime and if you’re going to go to all the trouble of cleaning your windows, you may as well spend some time on the tracks. Here are a few tips for getting through the job quickly and efficiently.
1. Using a vacuum cleaner with an attachment, vacuum out your tracks. This will get rid of any loose dirt, animal hair or dust. Use a stiff brush to dislodge some of the dirt to make for easier vacuuming.
2. Spray an all purpose spray cleaner (like 409) inside the track and then use a soft cloth to wipe down the down until they’re clean. You can always use large q-tips to get into the corners.
3. The outside tracks will be a bit dirtier, so use a garden hose with a spray attachment. First making sure all your windows are closed, use the water pressure to spray the tracks down and clean out the majority of the dirt. You can then use a mild detergent along with a sponge or scrub brush to get off the remaining gunk. Rinse again and then wipe the tracks dry with a clean cloth.
