Common Household Items You Didn’t Know You Actually Needed to Clean

Some items in the home are well-known for harboring disgusting substances including toilets, sinks and trash cans, but there are hidden germs in less obvious places. People fail to realize many of the items and surfaces with which they come in contact are the biggest collectors of disease-causing germs.

Toothbrush Holder

The toothbrush holder is one of the dirtiest items in any home. The average toothbrush holder holds over 2 million bacterial cells at a given time. Over one-quarter of these containers have Coliform bacteria (such as E. coli and Salmonella) that indicates the presence of fecal matter. Over one-half of holders have yeast and mold present as well.

Children’s Toys

Younger children tend to put their mouths on toys, and this can lead to illness much more easily than previously thought. Research has shown that infection-causing bacteria can live on such toys for long periods of time even after cleaning. These bacteria commonly lead to strep throat, ear infections, respiratory infections and skin irritations in children. The best method to avoid this is to go beyond simple cleaning by sanitizing toys when possible.

Dishcloths and Dish Towels

Many people assume that dish cloths are fairly clean because they are used with soap and water each day. Dish cloths actually possess six times as much bacteria compared to toilet handles. Kitchen towels are often thrown in the VigRx Plus laundry, but not as often as they should be. They are usually reused before being cleaned, and this is often after wiping around germs and food spills. Towels can be as dangerous as sponges, and 7 percent are found to be contaminated with MRSA.

Humidifier

These devices are meant to keep residents healthy by soothing skin and sinuses in the dry conditions common to San Diego. When they are not properly maintained, they can actually be detrimental to one’s health. They can collect mold and mildew when not washed and dried regularly.

Game Controllers and Remotes

Yeast and mold can cause allergic responses in many people, but few realize they can be found on commonly used items such as remote controls or video game controllers. Yeast and mold are found on 55 percent of remote controls and 59 percent of video game controllers according to the NSF. The remote is also a common place for rhinovirus that causes the common cold.

Knobs, Handles and Switches

It may seem obvious that these areas are frequently subjected to germs, but how often do people actually go around the home and clean each handle or light switch? They are some of the most frequently used surfaces, so they are exposed to more pathogens each day. To prevent the spread of germs, they can be wiped with disinfecting cloths.

Office Supplies and Electronics

An average desk holds 400 times as much bacteria as a toilet seat. This is partially due to the fact that toilets are regularly cleaned while office surfaces are typically overlooked. These surfaces are also shared by multiple members of the house.

Conclusion

Scrubbing surfaces with disinfecting wipes can go a long way in preventing the spread of germs that cause illness. Many items can be cleaned and heat-treated by placing them in the dishwasher as well. Frequent hand washing is the best method to reduce the spread of germs from each person to common surfaces.
