While we used to think that cornstarch was only used for thickening gravies or pressing clothes, we’ve been discovering tons of great uses for the product! The best part about cleaning with cornstarch is that it is a green cleaning solution, which means that it’s great for both your home and the environment. It also doesn’t have a strong odor, so it’s perfect if you’re sensitive to smells and the strong chemicals contained in most cleaning products. We wanted to share some great potential uses with you, so you can add cornstarch to your green cleaning arsenal.
Removing grease and oil stains: Because of its starchy consistency, cornstarch can soak up just about anything. Whether you have an oil spill on your driveway, or a grease stain on clothing or a tablecloth, just sprinkle some cornstarch on the area and let it sit for a few hours. This will soak up oil and will clear stains easily without damaging the surrounding area.
Cleaning carpets and rugs: Mixing cornstarch with baking soda is a great way to clean the carpets quickly and easily. Mix one part baking soda with two parts cornstarch and sprinkle on carpets. Wait 5 minutes and vacuum up the excess. Your carpets will not only be cleaner, they will also smell better!
Polishing your silverware or wood furniture: There are a few different ways to clean these three items. To polish silver, you’ll want to make a paste of cornstarch and water and apply it to the silver with a damp cloth. Wait for it to dry, and then simply wipe your silver clean. After you finish polishing your wooden furniture, you can sprinkle it with cornstarch and wipe it down. This will add a great gloss to the furniture.
There are plenty of other uses for cornstarch, and not just for cleaning specifically, but ranging from beauty tricks to baking to kids’ fun. We encourage you to incorporate this versatile green cleaning product into your cleaning arsenal.
