Having hardwood floors means you need to care for them properly to ensure you have beautiful floors for years to come. To prevent mold and wear down follow these tips for cleaning your hardwood floors so they last a lifetime.
Vacuum your floors once a week. Sand and grime can get down underneath and in the cracks acting like a sandpaper that will tear through your floors finish. Use an attachment with a brush as to not scratch the wood, a normal vacuum bar will do. You can also Swiffer or use a microfiber cloth instead of vacuuming.
Make sure you clean up spills right away. Especially hair spray and furniture polish can cloud up your finish. Make sure to clean with a damp cloth or non-ammonia cleaner so it doesn’t build up and cause damage. Water can damage the floors if it gets down deep into the wood. So make sure if you expecting rain you keep the windows shut so nothing get inside. Keep a tray or plate under potted indoor plants, so water doesn’t get to your floor through the pot.
Keep a no-wax wood floor cleaner on hand and near by, so when a spill does occur you can easily clean it up and protect the floor further. You need to be careful with wax cleaners and applying more wax. Never use wax on shellac, varnish, or polyurethane as it will make the floor too slippery. Find a cleaner specifically for your type of finish and test it out in a small corner to make sure it doesn’t cause damage.
Having door mats for the outside and inside will prevent dirt from coming in in the first place. The bigger the mat, the more dirt it will attract, even if people don’t rub their feet on them when entering. Hallways that are walked on often should be protected with a long rug. Just make sure the rugs don’t have a backing. Vinyl or rubber backings can trap humidity which can stain and damage the wood underneath.
